Hope

Over the past few months the world has become a bystander as some of the most significant events that will be recorded in our history unfolded.

Some mark the end of an era, others, mark tragedy and sorrow that will leave open wounds in the lives of those it has affected for many years to come.

There are no words to express the mourning and sorrow that we will all give for those who lost their lives, faced pain or anguish. There are however many words to express our joy and happiness at the success and accomplishment of the human race in some of it’s other goals.

Over the last twelve months, we’ve seen a mad man on the run, killing innocent people and terrifying many more before his ultimate demise.

We’ve seen the world come together in an international effort to rescue a small group of people just when we thought hope was lost.

We’ve seen the force of nature destroy lives and industry in a scale that will take many years to repair, and through that we have seen the contribution and efforts of a nation and it’s allies to slowly re-build and recover.

We’ve seen one of the biggest countries in the world finally remove from power the head of an international terrorist cell that changed history, and our lives forever marking a new sense of triumph for many, and a sense of progress and security for others.

We have even seen an entire country come together to mark the marriage of two people. That one pivotal day when a traditionally xenophobic nation famous for keeping itself to itself from even their own neighbours, came out into the streets in a union of celebration.

Over the last few days, one more tragedy has been added to the list. The outcome of which we still don’t know.

There are many other days and lives that will occur in our future. Countless more exist in our past. Make no mistake that as a race, humans are a dark species with many troubles, many pitfalls to avoid, and a steep learning curve that we must all face before we become what we believe ourselves to be.

To coin an old phrase, “We are but children”…

If there is one thing however that we have learnt, It’s that in the face of tragedy and uncertainty, the entire race will find a way to push forth and overcome the downfall.

In the wake of what has happened in Norway, millions of people are waking up once more with a new outlook, their lives changed forever. A new life awaits them, a new fear in their mind.

These people are no less significant, no less important than anyone else who has lost a loved one, or even had the moment where they realise “I could have been there if I just didn’t…”

Millions more will pray, thanking god for sparing them, or begging for their friends or family back.

Our future as a race is left only in our hands. We have many a dark cloud ahead, but many a ray of sunlight as well.

Our ability to adapt, to grow and learn is what makes us human and remarkable. We are stronger than any of us might think.

We are the human race, and we will prevail in the face of uncertainty and change. Our thoughts, hopes and prayers are given to each and every one of us that are suffering.
